Vienna or Wien's history goes way back to
Roman times like many cities throughout Europe, It is based on a
Roman military settlement called Vindobona. Situated in north-eastern
Austria, Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria.
Vienna is located on both banks of the Danube River,
with the foothills of the Eastern Alps on the west and the plains
of the Danube basin on the east. Vienna was for many centuries the
political and economic center of the Austrian Empire under the rule
of the Habsburg family, and between 1867 and 1918 was the capital
of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Today the city dominates the economic and cultural
life of Austria and contains about one-fifth of the country's population.
Vienna is not only the political, but also the cultural capital
of Austria. It offers a wide variety of theater, music, art and
cinemas and the cultural tradition of the high art that is well
known worldwide.
