Tourist Information -
Quebec
Quebec is a city and capital of the province of
Quebec, Canada. It is located at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence
and Saint Charles rivers in the southern part of the province. Quebec's
name is from an Algonquian word meaning "where the river narrows."
North of Mexico it is the only fortified city in North America.
It has been chosen as a world heritage site by the World Heritage
Committee (UNESCO).
Quebec City is very much the cradle of French civilization in North
America. Today it is a busy seaport, a centre of services and research,
a cultural hive of activity and the provincial capital. Quebec City
is located 250 km east of Montreal and about 850 km north of New
York City. Quebec City is almost entirely French in ancestry, in
sprit, and in language with around 95% of the population speaking
French.
