Canary Islands or Canaries (Spanish; Islas Canarias), is a group
of islands and autonomous region of Spain situated in the Atlantic
Ocean off the north-western coast of Africa. Comprising of the provinces
of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Their capitals are, Las
Palmas on Grand Canary and Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Tenerife Island.
The main islands of the group are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Grand
Canary (Gran Canaria), Lanzarote, La Palma and Gomera. The islands
are of volcanic origin.
Las Palmas, officially Las Palmas de Gran Canariais both a city
and a port in the Canary Islands and capital of Las Palmas Province.
Population (1991) 342,000.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a city and port in the Canary Islands,
on the coast of Tenerife being the largest of the Canaries and capital
of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Province. Population (1991) 190,000.
Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road here. Green UK
licence must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit.
Pink UK licence does not require the above. Minimum driving age
is 18
