Utrecht
Utrecht’s canals and wharfs enjoy worldwide
fame. No other city on earth has pedestrian wharfs along the water
quite like these. They were constructed centuries ago to provide
access to the cellars underneath the canalside buildings. The Dom
Church and Dom Tower stand at the centre of a crucifix of four churches:
the Pieterskerk, Pauluskerk, Janskerk and Mariakerk.
The Dom Tower is the highest church tower in Holland
and the symbol of the city. Visitors may climb at the highest gallery
(112 metres, 465 steps). A climb to the top of the Dom Tower gives
a good impression of the multifaceted city.
