Tourist information - Portugal
Portugal is a republic in south-western Europe, situated in the
western portion of the Iberian Peninsula and bordered on the north
and east by Spain and on the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean.
The Azores (Açores) and the Madeira Islands in the Atlantic
are self governing territories of Portugal.
Lisbon is the capital and largest city and also the leading seaport
of Portugal. Other important cities include Oporto, Coimbra and
Faro.
Lisbon has an exceptionally fine harbour. In Lisbon there are shipbuilding
yards, petroleum refineries, and plants producing chemicals, foodstuffs,
hardware, paper, and textiles. The chief exports include cork, canned
fish, olive oil, resin, and wine. Imports are mainly raw materials.
Oporto, also known as Porto, city, is capital of
Oporto District, mostly on the northern bank of the Douro (Duero)
River, not far from the Atlantic Ocean.
