Tourist information - London
London is the capital city of Great Britain, located in south-eastern
England. London is situated at the head of the Thames River estuary,
west of the river's mouth on the North Sea. One of the world's most
important financial and cultural centers, London is noted for its
museums, performing arts, exchange and commodity markets. Also prominent
are the insurance market and banking facilities. The City of London
and 32 surrounding boroughs form the Greater London metropolitan
area.
The 13 inner London boroughs are Camden, Hackney,
Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea,
Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth,
and the City of Westminster. The 19 outer boroughs are Barking and
Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Enfield,
Greenwich, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Kingston upon
Thames, Merton, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton, and Waltham
Forest.
With a population just short of eight million people,
London is Europe's largest city. It spreads across an area in excess
of 620 square miles from its centre being the River Thames. Ethnically
it's one of Europe's most diverse metropolises: some two hundred
languages are spoken within London, and over thirty percent of the
population of London is derived from first, second and third generation
immigrants.
