Honolulu is the capital city of Hawaii and seat of Honolulu County, located on the southern coast of Oahu Island. The urban area of Honolulu is governed as part of Honolulu County, which encompasses the island of Oahu and some outlying islets. This article discusses what the United States Bureau of the Census has delineated as the "census designated place" of Honolulu. The community is situated on a narrow plain extending east to west from Makapuu Point to Pearl Harbor and from the Pacific inland to the Koolau Mountains. It covers a land area of 214.5 sq km (82.8 sq mi). Two famous extinct volcanic craters, Diamond Head and the Punchbowl, are in Honolulu, which is noted for its magnificent setting and pleasant climate. The name Honolulu is derived from a Hawaiian term meaning "sheltered harbor." The world famous Waikiki beach attracts many thousands of tourists each year.
